Volunteering & Interning at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department

Volunteers and interns provide a variety of services to offenders in Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department custody. Volunteer coordinators screen and train volunteers from academic, social service or spiritual backgrounds to provide a variety of programs and meet the specific needs of detainees at the Suffolk County Jail and inmates at the House of Correction.

Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department volunteers come from a variety of different backgrounds and provide an essential public service to offenders in custody. Representatives from the following groups volunteer: Alcoholics Anonymous, ABCD – Breast Health Care, Boston College, Boston Healthy Start, Emmanuel College, Father Friendly Initiative, Narcotics Anonymous and Positive Directions, Inc., Ruah – Transitional Integration, SPAN, Inc./TIP.

The Sheriff’s Department also partners with local colleges and education partners in an internship program. Interns participate in a variety of different dimensions throughout the Department for academic credit. Positions are located at either the Nashua Street Jail or the House of Correction. We are currently looking for interns for many divisions, including:

· Social Services · Law Department
· Education · Budget
· Custody · Administration

Students must provide the coordinator with the requirements of their internship. The intern's duties will depend on personal knowledge and experience within the criminal justice or administrative field. Students from various undergraduate and graduate facilities have completed internships at the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department. Those institutions include: Boston University, Boston College, Suffolk University, Northeastern University, and Lesley College.
