Mel King
DATE:   02/09/2012
DESCRIPTION:   On the second half of the show, host Steve Tompkins talks with Mel King a local community activist, politician, and director of the South End Technology Center at Tent City. Steve talked with Mel about his earlier days as a State Representative from 1973–1982 and what led up to him running for office. They discussed issues going back to the founding of the United States Constitution through the most recent issues surrounding the occupy movement. Mel talked about his Mayoral run in Boston back in 1983 for former Mayor Kevin White’s vacated seat and the origin of the Rainbow Coalition. Steve asked Mel about South End land issues leading up to neighborhood protests and picketing of the area that is now known as “Tent City,” a mixed income residential development.
