Rehabilitation is an essential component to the mission
at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. Either awaiting
trial or incarcerated, offenders receive comprehensive education
and social service programs according to classification requirements. Services are provided at
both the Suffolk County Jail at Nashua Street and the House of Correction
through social service staff. A highly trained staff maintains close
contact with detainees and inmates to assess the needs of individuals
and provides appropriate services to meet immediate and long-term
needs.
By providing timely and professional evaluations and referrals to
programs, the social service division at the Suffolk County Jail
is a major resource in providing efficient overall operation. Responsibilities
for the division include classification, religious services, substance
abuse programs, referrals and disciplinary hearings. There are several
programs including, the Latino Health Institute, Alcoholics Anonymous
(AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Women’s Advocate and HIV/ AIDS
programs.
The Social Service Division at the House of Correction responds
to a variety of social, substance abuse, medical and reintegration
issues. The main goal of the Social Services Division is to ensure
that inmates have the opportunity to make their time at the facility
productive by addressing their problems and by taking ownership of
their decisions that led to criminal activity. Spiritual guidance
is also provided for the inmates as there are chaplains of several
different denominations who come in from the communities to provide
religious services.
In an effort to reduce the recidivism rates by reducing unemployment
rates of former inmates, the Department holds job fairs for inmates
nearing the end of their sentences.
