SHERIFF TOMPKINS TAKES PART IN ROXBURY COMMUNITY COLLEGE’S 39TH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES

Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins is recognized during the 39th Annual Commencement Exercises at Roxbury Community College.

Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins recently participated in Roxbury Community College’s 39th Annual Commencement, held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury.

Roxbury Community College (RCC) is a comprehensive, multicultural, urban, student–centered and open–access community college that provides learning opportunities for all who may benefit. The College serves the educational needs of Roxbury, surrounding communities and other diverse populations in the Commonwealth with the primary mission to facilitate the success of its students in achieving their educational goals.

This year’s ceremony granted more than 300 students with an Associate Degree in Arts, Science, or a Certificate with Specification.

Sheriff Tompkins, who is also the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for Roxbury Community College, took part in the procession with the other members of the Board of Trustees and Roxbury Community College faculty.

The ceremony featured musical performances; greetings from the alumni and the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, Dr. Richard Freeland; speeches from the co–valedictorians; a commencement address from the President of RCC, Dr. Valerie Roberson; and the presentation of Degrees and Certificates to RCC’s newest graduates.

“This is a great day for the Class of 2014 and their families, and I’m glad to be a part of it,” said Sheriff Tompkins. “The work that they’ve done and the commitment they’ve demonstrated towards their future through education has earned them a key that they can use to open many doors of opportunity. As a member of the Board of Trustees, I believe in the mission of RCC and what it seeks to accomplish with its students. Education is the cure for many of the ills that we face in society every day, and I’m always glad to see people—particularly younger people and people of color—choose education. I look forward to seeing where that path leads them in the future.”
