SHERIFF TOMPKINS TAKES PART IN EL PLANETA NEWSPAPER’S “POWERMETER 100” EVENT

Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins (second from left) with (l–r) Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera, Patricia Sánchez–Reyes of New York Life Insurance, Jacqui Conrad of Cambridge College, and Deborah Jackson, President of Cambridge College.

Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins took part in El Planeta Newspaper’s “Powermeter 100,” celebration, an event held to recognize the 100 most influential people for the Latino community of Massachusetts.

Celebrating its 10th year, the event honors “100 powerful people from all walks of life” and features musical performances, dancing and presentations, all taking place within the spacious and historic Museum of Fine Arts on Huntington Avenue in Boston.

Among the notable people on the Powermeter list were: Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, Boston Mayor Martin Walsh, U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, Senator Sonia Chang–Díaz, Lawrence Mayor Daniel Rivera, Tony Portillo of the East Boston Chamber of Commerce, Richard Chacon of WBUR, contemporary Pulitzer Prize winner Junot Díaz, Josefina Vázquez of the Boston Women’s Fund, Jacobo Negrón of the Massachusetts Latino Police Officers Association, Yadires Nova–Salcedo and Ángel Salcedo of Encuentro Latino, and many others.

Attending for his second consecutive year, Sheriff Tompkins spoke about his appreciation for the event and the people being honored.

“I first participated in this event last year and I enjoyed it very much,” said Sheriff Tompkins. “There are some good, talented people on the Powermeter 100 list and I’m glad to be able to come out and support them. Plus, the event and venue are really special. It is always a great privilege to be able to help recognize people making a positive contribution to society, particularly folk of color. I congratulate El Planeta on the Powermeter’s 10th Anniversary and look forward to helping them celebrate many more for years to come.”
