Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins recently joined with residents, elected officials and community organizations in honoring the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Attending multiple events held to remember the slain civil rights activist and champion of equality, Sheriff Tompkins participated in the Roxbury YMCA’s 6th Annual MLK Business and Community Breakfast on January 17th, and later sat with residents from Suffolk County and beyond for the 44th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on January 20th before joining in on the Martin Luther King Day of Service at Faneuil Hall.

Taking a moment to reflect between events about the extraordinary life of service that Dr. King led, Sheriff Tompkins spoke about the great achievements made in his time and those yet to be fully realized in his absence.

“Dr. King was just an amazing, committed individual who saw the great injustices of the world and sought to correct them,” said Sheriff Tompkins. “We as a nation and as a people have come a long way, thanks to his efforts and those of others around him, but we still have a ways to go before his dream can be fully realized.”

“We still incarcerate more people than any other nation on the planet and we incarcerate an inordinate number of people of color,” Sheriff Tompkins continued. “We still have a lot of work to do in that respect and we have more to do to ensure that there is equality for all and compassion for those less fortunate than ourselves. But, we have a great model to work from, thanks to the efforts of Dr. King.”
