Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins with Makeeba McCreary and Thaddeus Miles of MassHousing at Think Big, Dream Big’s summer closing ceremony.

Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins recently attended the closing of Think Big, Dream Big’s summer program as a follow up to his earlier visit with the teens in late July.

The Think Big Dream Big program, which just completed its second year, was derived from a Town Hall Youth Conference held at Harvard University in 2011 and seeks to encourage accomplished high school and college students to become agents of change. The curriculum has several components, such as leadership development, college and career preparation, media literacy, digital storytelling, civic engagement, social responsibility, team building and health and wellness.

In his previous visit to the program, Sheriff Tompkins spoke to the assembly of young people about pursuing their dreams and creating opportunities for themselves. He returned to the program at the end of the summer session to show his support and observe their progress.

During this visit, which was held at MassHousing’s office in Downtown Boston, program participants conducted presentations to a room filled with approximately one–hundred and fifty people, relating their experiences in the internship and various social issues that they researched over the course of the summer. The event also included video narratives of their stories, and a mini–movie used to showcase the consequences of hanging with the wrong crowd.

At the conclusion of the presentations, Sheriff Tompkins was thanked for attending the event and received a Think Big, Dream Big ruler as a reminder of and token of thanks for his experiences with the program.

Expressing his gratitude, Sheriff Tompkins said, “Thank you so much for this. I appreciate the work you all are doing here and it’s an honor to have been a part of it.” He then turned to the young people of the program and said, “I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for you.”
