Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins (far left) was joined at the 10th Annual African American Veterans Military Heritage Day celebration by (from left to right) Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson, Boston Police Officer Dennis Rory, members of the Charlestown High School Jr. ROTC.

Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins joined veterans of the armed forces, their families, friends and supporters to help celebrate the 10th Annual African American Veterans Military Heritage Day.

Held at the General Edward O. Gourdin Veterans Memorial Park in Roxbury, the event takes place each year to celebrate and honor the service of African American Military Veterans of the community from all wars, including those currently serving the United States of America.

Sheriff Tompkins lent his support to the event alongside members of participating organizations, which included event hosts the Organization Afro American Veterans, Inc.; the Massachusetts National Guard; the 54th Massachusetts Regiment; Fife Army National Guard Band; Buffalo Soldiers Heritage; Ramsay/Toy VFW Post; William E. Carter Post 16; Tri-Ad Veterans League, Inc.; 60+ Veterans Group, Local High School Jr. ROTC units, 272 Veterans Association; and others.

The purpose of annually celebrating African American Military Heritage Day in the Roxbury Community is, according to event organizers, “to highlight within our community the service and contributions of African American veterans from all wars. This history should not be forgotten now that the community has a veterans memorial park to honor our veterans. Therefore, it is the purpose of the Organization of Afro–American Veterans, Inc. and other military veterans’ organizations to gather every year at General Edward O. Gourdin Veterans Memorial Park to perpetuate the history and contributions of Afro–American military veterans.”
