Recently, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department joined with a host of local community groups, businesses, and residents to help celebrate the 4th Annual West End Children’s Festival.

The coalition behind the event – the West End Community Collaborative, which is comprised of the West End Community Center, the West End Civic Association, the West End Museum, and the Mayor’s Elderly Commission – helps to bring together residents, local merchants, agencies, organizations, and members of the law enforcement community to take part in the community celebration. As the Collaborative’s only fundraiser, the goal of the West End Children’s Festival is to secure the future of children’s programming in the neighborhood and surrounding communities.

According to organizers of the event, the Festival was founded in 2006 by a group of twenty-seven children who, “shared a common desire to bring their community together.” Initially conceived as a neighborhood block party, the West End Children’s Festival drew more than 1,000 attendees in its first year and the numbers have continued to soar as several new programs and workshops have been added every year.

Lending their services to the cause, Sheriff’s Department members staffed a table at the Festival administering the Ident-A-Youth fingerprinting program and distributing Sheriff Cabral’s “Safety Tips For Kids” coloring books and crayons, and Junior Deputy badges to the many children attending the Festival.

Speaking about the Festival and its participants, event Activities Coordinator Robin Assaf gave thanks to the Department for their involvement and support.

“Sheriff Cabral and the Nashua Street Jail have been excellent neighbors and we deeply appreciate their participation in our community events,” Assaf said. “I saw so many happy little Sheriffs all around the Children’s Festival that I was smiling all day.”
