The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department has just launched
a new web log or “Blog” detailing the legislative
issues and advocacy of Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral.
With the assistance of Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department
Director of Legislative Affairs Matt O’Malley, the blog
has been created as a means to demystify the legislative process
and to further advance Sheriff Cabral’s objective to
achieve transparency and participation in governmental affairs
for residents of Suffolk County.
Regular blog features include “Ask The Sheriff”, an entry which
allows visitors to pose questions to Sheriff Cabral about issues dealing with
county corrections, reentry programming, department policy, and other law related
queries; “Meet The Suffolk County Delegation”, which lists the
names and contact information for all nineteen State Representatives and six
Senators serving the Suffolk County area, which includes the Cities of Boston,
Chelsea, and Revere, and the town of Winthrop; and ongoing reports about new
legislation, budget status, and a host of other related information.
“The sheriff is a strong proponent of utilizing new media as much as possible
and this is clearly a step in that direction,” said O’Malley, as
he described the format and reasoning behind the blog’s launch. “Given
the fact that Sheriff Cabral is an elected official and that some of our initiatives
are collaborations with state, federal, and local government, we thought it
was important to open up insight into how the legislative process works.”
“Further,” O’Malley continued. “It gives residents of
Suffolk County the opportunity to communicate with the Sheriff’s Department
and develop a more direct connection towards the understanding of how legislation works.
Transparency and openness are the hallmarks of Sheriff Cabral’s administration and
this is one of the ways in which we can continue to foster that goal.”
