On July 31, members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s
Department Honor Guard presented colors before a Boston Red
Sox game held at Fenway Park. Sheriff’s Department Deputies:
Joe Barnes, Jason Campbell, Chris Kiley, Julio Pena, Justinino
Plaza, Daniel Salas, Kenneth Sheehan, and Deputy Walter Vasile,
presented colors during the National Anthem before the Red
Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles ballgame.
“I’m proud to be a member of the
honor guard,” said Deputy Sheehan. “It
was an incredible feeling to present colors
on the baseball field in front of the thousands
of fans inside Fenway Park.”
Community Service Officer, Deputy Abe Ayuso
has been working with the Boston Red Sox and
several other New England sports teams to have
the Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard
present colors during an opening ceremony of
their games. Just this past February, the guard
attended a Boston Celtics Game inside the TD
Banknorth Garden.
Honor guard member Deputy Kiley, an attendee
of both events, had this to say: “I want
to give a special thanks to Deputy Ayuso for
setting this up and helping to make it happen.”
Honor guard coordinator Deputy Vasile said, “We
are proud and honored to be here representing
the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department
at Fenway Park for the Red Sox. We look forward
to doing more games if they invite us back.”
"Every year, we get different requests
from color guards throughout Massachusetts
to come and present before the start of a Red
Sox game,” said Dan Lyons, Manager of
Entertainment and Special Event Operations
for the Red Sox. “Some of them, like
the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department,
have been coming back making almost a yearly
appearance."
"We think it’s always good to open
up the process to a lot of different groups,” he
continued. “We’d like to have not
only our military forces present, but groups
like the Boy Scouts and honor guards from all
over the New England States.”
Unfortunately, even with Beckett on the mound,
the Boston Red Sox lost to the Orioles by a
score of 5–3.
