| In a ceremony held at the Back Bay Hilton on Friday, January
19, Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral administered the
Correction Officers Oath to twenty–one new officers. As graduates
of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department Correction
Officer Training Academy Class 06–02, the officers have received
some of the best training in the Commonwealth over the course
of twelve weeks. The graduation ceremony brought the number
of academy classes completed under Sheriff Cabral to eleven.
Four of the officers joined the ranks of the officers at
the South Bay House of Correction and the remainder of the
class has been assigned to the Nashua Street Jail.
Sheriff Cabral commended the graduates for their perseverance
and dedication as well as thanked family and friends attending
the ceremony for their continuing support. She also described
the complex role correction officers play on a daily basis.
“Correction officers are responsible for not only providing
safe and secure custody of inmates and detainees, they also
act as counselors, teachers, and mentors, making a remarkable
impact on many lives,” said Sheriff Cabral.
Before receiving their badges and diplomas, Class President
Gregory Christian also addressed the class, describing their
qualities as a group.
“We come from different backgrounds, we are tall and
short, black and white, male and female. These are the obvious
differences, the things that are easy to focus on. This diversity
is good, but it is not what is most important,” Officer
Christian said. “Most important is our commonality;
our individual commitment to doing what is right, acting with
integrity, and holding ourselves to a higher standard, all
of which we believe are the cornerstones of the Suffolk County
Sheriff’s Department.”
