Boston- Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral is pleased to announce that Sheriff’s Department Deputy Michael White has been awarded the Meritorious Conduct award for 2005 at the Massachusetts State House on Monday, June 26, 2006. Deputy White along with thirty-five other Correction Officers from across the Commonwealth was honored at the 9th Annual “Correction Officer of the Year” ceremony. The official ceremony took place inside the House of Representatives Chambers of the Massachusetts State House with a reception immediately following in the Grande Staircase.

Deputy White was honored for his actions during an incident that took place on July 5, 2005. While returning to South Bay from another facility, he observed a vehicle that had been involved in an accident. Upon inspection of the accident, he noticed a 19-year-old woman lying on the ground suffering from a head wound. After receiving permission to stay on the scene, he proceeded to administer first aid while EMS and the Massachusetts State Police were contacted.

At the ceremony, Undersecretary from the Executive Office of Public Safety Patrick Bradley mentioned how each of these Correction Officers showed the community how resourceful they were by their actions. “More than ever, work calls [for Correction Officers] to use compassion, strength and courage,” said Bradley.

“The role of the Correction Officer is continually changing,” said Secretary of Public Safety Robert Hass. “These awards give us the opportunity to show the community as a whole, the versatility of your job and the commitment that you put forth day in and day out to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth.”

Michael White has been an officer at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department for over 14 years and Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral promoted him to a Deputy Sheriff in November 2002.

Attending the State House ceremony with Deputy White was his mother, Barbara White, sister, Barbara Cochrane, nephew, Sean Cochrane, Fiancé, Kimberly Callender, and her sons Zachary and Joshua Callender.
