South Boston - Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department officers Deputy Abe Ayuso and Corporal Tom Derosa visited the Castle Cove Cooperative Apartments on West 2nd Street Tuesday, February 21, to reach out to Suffolk County seniors. The two officers brought the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department Elderly ID program to Castle Cove residents.

The Elderly ID program provides Suffolk County Seniors with colored identification cards. The cards include a photo of the cardholder, his or her name, address, blood type, and medical history, and the name and phone number of the cardholder’s physician and an emergency contact. The information is vital in an emergency situation and the ID card is an important aid to medical responders.

Ruth Bunch, who has been a resident at Castle Cove for nine years, was one of the almost twenty-five seniors from Castle Cove and more than three hundred from across Suffolk County to take advantage of the program.

“I think this is a great idea,” Bunch said. “You can have an ID even if you don’t have a driver’s license, and with stolen identity issues, the card will help against crime.”

In addition to providing seniors with ID cards, Deputy Ayuso and Corporal Derosa handed out booklets on senior safety and offered advice about how the Castle Cove residents can protect themselves. Branch also had advice for Suffolk County seniors:

“If the Sheriff’s Department sends the Elderly ID program to you, take advantage of the opportunity!”
