Dorchester - Officers from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department
K-9 unit visited St. Ann’s School in Dorchester Thursday, February
2. Students from kindergarten up to eighth grade filled the gymnasium
to watch as the officers spoke about the dangers of drug use and gave
a demonstration with their four-legged partners.
Lieutenant Murphy with partner Kam, a German Sheppard, Sergeant
Stack with Iko, a Belgian Malinois, and Corporals Frates
and Lewis, with black Labs Kilo and Luka, first spoke about
why and how students should avoid drugs, then had the dogs
perform a mock drug search and catch a simulated purse snatcher.
The students were then invited to try on Sheriff’s
Department training equipment, including bite suits, gas
masks, and helmets.
Principal Cynthia Duggan was happy to have the K-9 team at
her school and that the officers talked to her students substance
abuse. She requested that the Sheriff’s Department send
the K-9 unit to the school to show that the dogs are trained
to protect them. “I am in awe of how well these dogs
are trained,” she said. “The demonstrations were
wonderful. It’s good to know these dogs are out there.”
