Boston — Suffolk County Sheriff
Andrea J. Cabral was happy to take time out of her busy schedule,
Monday December 19, to lend a hand to the Salvation Army Red Kettle
Campaign. A yearly tradition, Sheriff Cabral has taken part in the
Salvation Army Celebrity Bell Ringer program since she was appointed
Sheriff in 2002. Standing in front of Macy’s in Downtown Crossing,
as she does every year, Sheriff Cabral collected donations and handed
out candy canes with members of her Communications and External Affairs
Department.
The Salvation Army began the tradition of the Red Kettle Campaign in
1891 in San Francisco. Since then, the program has grown and spread
with campaigns being conducted worldwide. This year the Salvation Army
also created a Virtual Red Kettle Campaign to collect donations through
the Internet. The kettles raise about $100 million each Christmas season,
providing food, clothing, shelter, and toys for over six million people.
While collecting donations for the Salvation Army, Sheriff Cabral had
a chance to speak with some Suffolk County residents and hear their
comments and concerns. One ex-inmate of the South Bay House of Correction
donated to the charity, then told the Sheriff he had been sober since
being released from the institution, and commended the Sheriff’s
Department for the many recovery programs it provides to inmates.
David Goldberg, of the Salvation Army, was grateful for the help Sheriff
Cabral gave the Red Kettle Campaign, saying “The Celebrity Bell
Ringers help raise crucial awareness of Salvation Army programs across
the state by donating their time to bell ring.”
