SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT COMMUNITY WORKS PROGRAM CREW PREPARES ICE SKATING RINK

Dorchester— The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department Community Works Program (CWP) crews worked last week to prepare the Devine Memorial Skating Rink in Dorchester for the upcoming skating season. The rink, located on Morrissey Boulevard, was the second skating rink this season the crews helped spruce up. Just last month, a CWP crew was at the Murphy Memorial Skating Rink in South Boston.

CWP is a program for low-risk inmates at the Suffolk County House of Correction who have received vocational training in areas including landscaping and ground maintenance, painting, building maintenance, and carpentry. These inmates are taken into Suffolk County to use the skills they have learned to make improvements in public spaces. The goal of the program is to reduce recidivism by teaching inmates to become employable citizens upon release.

Inside the facility, the CWP crew cleaned and painted hallways, locker rooms, bathrooms, offices and the lobby area.

“The guys did a good job. They were very neat and kept up with the work that was given to them,” said Edward G. Williams, Asstant Supervisor at the Department of Conservation and Recreation. He continues, “This is a great program [CWP] and I hope it continues for a long time.”
