Winthrop — Suffolk County Sheriff’s
Department Community Works Program (CWP) crew raked leaves and cleaned
out debris in the Town of Winthrop Cemetery. A CWP crew worked in
conjunction with the town’s cemetery workers for four days
last week bringing refuse to town dump trucks for disposal.
The CWP is a program for low-risk inmates at the Suffolk County
House of Correction who have received vocational training in areas
including landscaping and ground maintenance, painting and building
maintenance, and carpentry. Under strict officer supervision, these
inmates are taken into Suffolk County to use the skills they have
learned to make improvements in public spaces. The goal of the program
is to reduce recidivism by teaching inmates to become employable
citizens upon release.
The Sheriff’s Department CWP crews have been working for
over seven years with the officials in Winthrop on various projects.
Crews have painted and repaired fences, cleaned up leaves and debris
in the cemetery, painted park benches, and painted traffic light
poles all across the town.
Robert “Doug” Donahue, the Winthrop Commissioner of
Cemeteries had lots of praise for the outstanding work that continues
to be done for the residents of Winthrop. He said, “I want
to thank Sheriff Cabral for allowing Rich Pacitti to bring the Community
Service Officers to Winthrop. The Sheriff’s Department has
been doing a fantastic job over the years and has been very good
to the Town of Winthrop.” He continues, “ They perform
a great service and offer a great savings to the taxpayers.”
Al Espinola, the Chairman of the Winthrop Cemetery Commission said,
“I appreciate all the work the Sheriff’s Department
is doing, the residents are satisfied with the cemetery and it looks
much more inviting [to visit].”
