SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT COMMUNITY WORKS PROGRAM CREWS PREPARE ICE SKATING RINK

South Boston — The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department Community Works Program (CWP) crews worked through October to prepare the Murphy Memorial Skating Rink in South Boston for the upcoming skating season. The rink, located on Day Boulevard, was officially scheduled to open on Sunday, October 22.

CWP is a program for low-risk inmates at the Suffolk County House of Correction who have received vocational training in areas including landscaping and ground maintenance, painting, building maintenance, and carpentry. These inmates are taken into Suffolk County to use the skills they have learned to make improvements in public spaces. The goal of the program is to reduce recidivism by teaching inmates to become employable citizens upon release.

The CWP crews painted guard rails surrounding the exterior of the building and the outside benches. Inside the facility, crews cleaned and painted the hallways, locker rooms, bathrooms, the surrounding lobby area and the outside rink boards.

“The crews did a fabulous job on the rink. I have nothing but good things to say about the great work the inmates have done and [thank] the Sheriff’s Department for their help,” said Fred Nee, Acting Rink Manager.
