Boston —
The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department held a clothing drive
this year to aid victims affected by Hurricane Katrina. The clothing
drive ran from the first Monday of September through the first Monday
of October.
The Department collected four laundry bins full of men’s,
women’s, and children’s clothing including shoes, toys
and bedding. There were nearly 800 donated items in total. Monetary
donations made out to the Red Cross were also accepted from the
staff.
The donations, collected at both the South Bay House of Correction
and the Nashua Street Jail, were taken to the Veterans Association
of Boston. From there, employees at the Veterans Association brought
the collections to Edwards Air Force Base, where evacuees are currently
housed.
“We want to thank Sheriff Cabral and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s
Department for their generous donations,” said Gloria Ann
Vieira, Administration Officer of the Veterans Association. “The
evacuees will be very appreciative of the Department’s support.”
