Boston —
The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees
(AFSCME) Local 419 and the Jail Officers and Employees Association
of Suffolk County (JOEASC) both ratified contracts Friday, September
23 with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. The ratifications
ended a long period of talks between the two unions and the Sheriff’s
Department labor negotiators.
Key changes included a pay increase of 9% over four years and the
addition of employee performance evaluations. The evaluations will
not be used for disciplinary actions, but will be considered during
the promotional process.
The Sheriff’s Department is pleased with the outcome of negotiations.
Said Mike Harris, Superintendent of Human Resources for the Department,
“Any time the Sheriff’s Department and the Bargaining
Units can agree, we have accomplished something. With the ratification
of the union contracts, we continue to build a constructive labor/management
relationship.”
