SUFFOLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT JOINS FESTIVITIES AT OLLIE ROAD RACE

South Boston — Officers and civilian staff from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department were on hand at the post-race carnival for the Ollie Road Race, Saturday, October 1, to spread a message of youth safety to participants.

The Ollie Road Race, which is held annually, raises funds for the South Boston Neighborhood House (SBNH). Registration fees collected during the two-day event help cover costs for SBNH services, including introductory computer classes, an entire Family-Fun Night providing educational support and literacy instruction to more than 50 families, tuition for one child to attend a full day preschool program, and the salary for a Substance Abuse Counselor working with adolescent support groups.

“This is our biggest fund raiser of the year,” said Gretchen Carney, Operations Manager for the SBNH. “We need these funds to keep our programs running.”

The Sheriff’s Department participated by handing out safety tip coloring books and plastic badges at the carnival held Saturday after the children’s road races. Officers and staff also took children’s fingerprints for parents to keep with a current photo in case their child ever goes missing, to aid the search process.
