Boston — The Suffolk County Correction Officer Training Academy Class 05-03 graduated this month, in a ceremony held at the Ritz-Carlton on Avery Street. It was the eighth class to have graduated since Sheriff Cabral’s appointment in November of 2002.

According to Sheriff Cabral, who was keynote speaker at the event, “The role of a correction officer is often misunderstood and certainly undervalued. Correction officers are not only charged with the safety and security of those in custody, but provide counseling, education, training, and mentoring.” Sheriff Cabral stressed the importance of being a role model to those in custody.

The class of 27 men and women was also addressed by Lieutenant Keith Medeiros, Academy Director, and class president Christos Zamakis, who reminisced about the first days of training and how the class became a team, and thanked friends and family for their support. The graduates then took the Correction Officers’ Oath from Sheriff Cabral and received their badges.

Members of the class will now work either at the South Bay House of Correction or the Nashua Street Jail.
