Boston—On July 13, members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department participated in a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) at Champions Bar and Grill in Copley Place. Office and business workers from around the Copley Square area signed up weeks prior to the event as volunteers and helped raise money aiding in the battle over Muscular Dystrophy.

Sheriff’s Corporal Tom DeRosa, Deputy Tom Lee, Deputy Henry Lehman, along with Coordinator of Community Affairs, Ann Stanton, and summer youth intern, Nichole Montgomery-Boone, all helped out during the event. They went in marked cruisers to pickup the volunteers, referred to as jailbirds, and brought them back to a mock judge who made them put on a jail uniform and take a mug shot behind bars. The jailbirds then used telephones to raise their bail money by contacting their pledge supporters. After the bail was reached, they were released and given a ride back to their offices in a limousine. The event held at Champions Restaurant in Copley Place helped raise over $25,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

To raise the necessary funds for fighting Muscular Dystrophy, The MDA of Boston sponsors the Lock-Up event quarterly at various restaurants around the City of Boston. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department has been supporting these events for over six years now and enjoys helping to make the event a huge success. The staff is looking forward to continuing their tradition by helping the MDA at the next neighborhood Lock-Up.
