SUFFOLK COUNTY SHERIFF ANDREA J. CABRAL SWORN IN


Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral was sworn in this afternoon as the 30th Sheriff in the history of Suffolk County. Massachusetts Sheriffs are elected for six-year terms and have distinct responsibility for the administration of the county correctional systems, the service of judicial process, the transportation of prisoners and various other law enforcement functions. Andrea J. Cabral is the first female in the Commonwealth’s history to hold the position of Sheriff. Cabral brings an extensive legal background and a commitment to public safety to the position.

The ceremony was held at the South Bay House of Correction. Chief of Staff Elizabeth Keeley administered the oath. In addition Gerard Horgan, the Superintendent at the House of Correction, was sworn in as Special Sheriff. The Special Sheriff serves as acting Sheriff in the event the Sheriff is unavailable to perform her official duties.
