Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral is profiled on the cover
of the latest edition of Boston College Magazine—an alumni
publication that reaches nearly 150,000 Eagle graduates, staff
and friends.
Sheriff Cabral, a 1981 graduate of BC, was featured because of
her work in the past year reforming and transforming the Suffolk
County Sheriff’s Department. She was appointed by then-Gov.
Jane Swift in December 2002 after former Sheriff Richard Rouse
retired. Rouse and the Department were targets of a special commission
appointed by the governor to investigate charges of abuse and mismanagement.
The report labeled the Department a “deeply troubled institution” and
it was up to the next sheriff to bring about reform.
Ben Birnbaum, editor of the magazine, said while it was unusual
for the magazine to select profiles for its cover, Sheriff Cabral’s
story merited a closer look. “Boston College has many alumni
of enormous accomplishment, we select just a handful each year
to profile in the magazine. We felt Sheriff Cabral’s work
deserved the attention of all alum.”
The magazine is mailed to the school’s alumni, faculty,
staff, donors and parents of undergraduates and may be read online
on the Suffolk
County Sheriff's Department Website or Boston
College's Website.
