Suffolk County House of Correction will be highlighted on an episode
of MTV’s reality-based show "True Life: I’m in
the System, " on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 10 p.m.
The documentary features three segments about young people and
their involvement with the legal system around the country. At
the House of Correction, MTV film crews followed inmate Maurice Jordan as
he adjusted to life in prison.
Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral allowed cameras inside
the prison to show MTV’s audience that there is no glamour behind the walls.
"I hope the generation that watches MTV realize that being in jail
isn’t the rite of passage depicted in videos or song," Sheriff
Cabral said. "Young people need to understand that they are
unprepared for the stress imprisonment inflicts on you, not to mention
how a prison record will limit your dreams and aspirations later
on in life. What the viewers will see in this segment is an articulate
young man, who despite his intelligence, made the wrong choices and
ended up in prison," the Sheriff said.
MTV producers interviewed inmates in early October before choosing
Jordan. Crews spent several days filming his activities during
October and November.
Besides Jordan’s segment, the show also documents a New York
City parolee readjusting to life outside jail, and a California woman
caring for her children while her boyfriend is incarcerated.
