SUFFOLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT COLLECTS TOYS FOR TOTS

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department ended its annual Toys for Tots collection on Dec. 22. The collection of toys will go to needy children across the nation. There were two collection sites at the Department, one located at The House of Correction and the other at The Nashua Street Jail. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s department collected over 400 toys to be picked up by United States Marines.

“This is a wonderful way for all of us to contribute to those less fortunate,” Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral said. “I am pleased that so many employees find the time and make the effort to help needy children. It’s a great gesture during a time when the holidays mean so much for youngsters.”

Department organizers and volunteers this year included Deputy Tom DeRosa, Karen Lamontagne, Sergeant Gallo, Lieutenant Coppie, and Ann Stanton. The Toys for Tots program is run in conjunction with the United States Marine Corps Reserve and provides gifts to thousands of children every year. The program was developed in 1947 by the Marine Corps Reserve. In 2002, the Toys for Tots campaign across the country donated over 12.9 million toys.
