Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral today named Superintendent Gerard Horgan as the new Special Sheriff. “Gerard Horgan has worn many different hats this year and is an indispensable asset for the Department. He leads by example and is the kind of dedicated public servant about whom little is ever written. He is here, every day, going above and beyond what is required because doing the job well is what matters most,” Sheriff Cabral said.

Supt. Horgan began the year as Deputy Superintendent at the House of Correction. In January, he was promoted to Superintendent of the Nashua Street Jail. And this month, he was appointed Superintendent of the House of Correction to replace Patrick Bradley who left the Department to be Undersecretary for Criminal Justice in the Executive Office for Public Safety.

Supt. Horgan started his career with the Department in the Personnel Office at Charles Street in 1987. While working for the Department, he earned his law degree from Suffolk Law School in 1993, and the following year was promoted to Director of Personnel.

In 1997, Supt. Horgan was promoted to Deputy Superintendent of Support Services at the Jail where he supervised transportation, booking, medical, property, maintenance, laundry, canteen, building and grounds, and mechanical divisions. Two years later, he was promoted to Deputy Superintendent of Program and Support Services and oversaw Social Services, Education, Vocational Services, Classification, Records, Inmate Grievances and Disciplinary Boards.

Superintendent Horgan has also managed the medical contract for the private vendor at the House of Correction and served as a member of the Policy Review Committee.
