The Women’s Resource Center, a
substance abuse treatment, counseling and educational program operated
by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department in Jamaica Plain,
has relocated to the Suffolk County Courthouse in Boston. All programs
will be retained in the new quarters on the seventh floor of the Courthouse.
“We had a wonderful relationship with the Jamaica Plain community,
but budget cuts have forced us to make tough choices,” said
Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral. “By relocating the
center, our staff can continue to provide the programs we need to help female offenders.”
The Suffolk County Women’s Resource Center opened in January
2001 to serve the specific needs of female offenders. The first-of-its-kind
center combines the Sheriff’s staff with other law enforcement
agencies and service providers to develop rigorous protocols to ensure
that women assigned to the Center take responsibility for their behavior.
The Center is a day treatment program for non-violent offenders
between the ages of 18 and 60 years old and whose crimes range from
shoplifting to drug possession.
The Center can accommodate 50 female offenders and provide a wide
range of services, including drug and alcohol screening, community
service programs, educational, vocational and life skills programs,
counseling and case management. Two of the Center’s contract
vendors, Bunker Hill Community College and Bay State Community Service,
provide a variety of services including education, job assistance
and drug testing.
