Human ResourcesJob FairThe Human Resources Division has an exceptionally selective hiring process encompassing the most stringent pre–employment requirements in corrections. Placing an emphasis on maturity and professionalism, the minimum hiring age is 21 years of age and preferred applicants are now expected to possess college–level degrees, and all are initially screened using a highly selective criteria that includes a thorough review of past job history, a character assessment and a CORI check. Job advancement is made using criteria that is predicated upon proven ability and past performance. Custody staff must also pass a written test in order to reach each successive level of promotion in the ranks. Recognizing that exemplary hiring and promotional standards are merely front–end solutions to professionalizing a workforce, there is mandatory annual performance appraisals for all employees. As one of the only remaining law enforcement agencies to maintain an in–house, independent Employee Assistance Program (EAP), the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department is committed to providing custody and non–custody employees alike with the most comprehensive resources available to help them maintain optimum mental and physical health. This valuable resource provides confidential, off–site assistance and referrals for employees with substance abuse issues, mental healthcare needs, family related concerns, and other on the job stressors that are unique to the corrections profession.
