The Community Works Program, CWP, allows certain appropriately classified
inmates to pay back local communities by providing a necessary service
while at the same time allowing the inmates an opportunity to contribute
to society. The program sends inmates who are close to completion of
their sentences into the community under the supervision of a Corrections
Officer to provide labor for a variety of projects including the restoration
of vacant spaces, boarding and securing abandoned buildings and beautifying
these municipal properties with a fresh coat of paint. The end result
of participation is simple—inmates give back to the community
a measure of the cost of their incarceration, while learning the value
of conducting themselves properly and in a meaningful capacity.
