Volunteering & Interning at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department
Volunteer or Intern at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department
Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department volunteers come from diverse backgrounds to provide
essential public services to offenders in custody. Volunteer coordinators screen and train individuals
from academic, social service, spiritual, legal and other fields to meet the specific needs of detainees
at the Suffolk County Jail and inmates at the House of Correction.
Representatives from the following groups, among others, volunteer: Alcoholics Anonymous, Boston College, Boston Healthy Start, Boston Medical Center, Boston Public Health Commission, Narcotics Anonymous, Positive
Directions Inc., and ROCA.
The Sheriff’s Department also partners with local colleges in an internship program. Interns may participate
in a variety of programs throughout the Department for academic credit. We are currently accepting applications for
many divisions, including:

Students must provide the coordinator with the requirements of their internship. The intern’s
duties will depend on personal knowledge and experience within the criminal justice or administrative
field. Students from various undergraduate and graduate facilities have completed internships at the
Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. Those institutions include: Boston University, Boston College,
Bunker Hill Community College, Harvard University, Lesley College, Northeastern University, Roxbury
Community College, Suffolk University, and University of Massachusetts.
