Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse
General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities
Provides routine nursing care and emergency medical treatment; assists other
health professionals in caring for inmates; performs professional general duty
nursing in a correctional institution; provides information as requested; performs
related work as required.
Supervision Received
Works under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing and the Health Services
Administrator. Receives general administrative supervision from the Deputy Superintendent
of Support Services. Receives general medical supervision from the physician, dentist,
psychiatrist, Director of Nursing and Health Services Administrator.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepares and completes medical and other related records and charts;
- Has immediate and direct responsibility for the medical care and treatment of
all prisoners within the assigned Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department facility;
- Maintains accurate and complete medical records, files, and charts regarding
each patient seen and for all medications dispensed or prepared;
- Schedules and prepares records and paperwork for clinic appointments, doctor
visits and referrals;
- Responds to all medical emergencies and keeps complete and accurate record of
medical procedures and personnel involved;
- Assists the physician, psychiatrist, and dentist in delivery of services;
- Notifies the Shift Commander of medical emergency status and need for additional
medical assistance in the absence of the Director of Nursing;
- Prepares reports, statistics, records, files, and documents as assigned;
- Has daily contact with detainees in the Suffolk County Jail;
- Maintains thorough knowledge of all medical, psychiatric and dental standing orders
and procedures as well as Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department policies and procedures;
- Flexibility and ability to learn and perform new duties and skills as assigned;
- Such other duties as the Sheriff may assign from time to time.
Qualifications
- Massachusetts Registration in Registered Nursing;
- Experience or/and training in psychiatry, drug addiction and alcohol abuse,
or/and previous correctional facility nursing experience;
- Current CPR Certification.
